The Balthus greys
Balthus set bronzes, antique heads and baroque busts about the salons, lit by low lamps. For the walls he devised muted tones — faded pinks, ochres, earths — now known as the “Balthus greys”. Each room is composed like a painting, where the ancient object converses with the light.
