Obelisk and loggia

The most illustrious residents

From the loggia to the gardens, these places have seen some of the greatest names in French art. Even before the Academy, Velázquez painted two views of the garden here, and Galileo was received by the Medici. Then came the Prix de Rome laureates: the painter Jacques-Louis David, Ingres who would direct the villa, the sculptor Carpeaux, the composers Berlioz and Debussy, the architect Charles Garnier. Their works now fill the Louvre, the Musée d’Orsay and the great museums of the world. Jean Marc Lange belongs to this lineage — the last chapter of an almost three-hundred-year history.
